Kyiv Classic Orchestra: “Requiem for those who died” in the ruins

On July 12, 2024, the Ukraine National Specialized Children's Hospital “Okhmatdyt” honored the memory of the victims of the russian attack on July 8.

At the beginning, a prayer service led by Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and all Ukraine, was held near the destroyed ward of Ukraine's largest children's hospital. Hospital staff, military personnel, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and all those who cared laid flowers and toys at the ruins.

Then, the chamber group of the Kyiv Classic Orchestra, led by conductor Herman Makarenko, UNESCO Artist for Peace, presented a requiem concert in honor of those who died in the ruins of Okhmatdyt. The audience was moved to tears by a number of heartfelt pieces that were performed close to the destroyed buildings.

“Given the decades-long collaboration between the Kyiv Classic Orchestra and Okhmatdyt, we felt compelled to respond to this horrific catastrophe. We just debuted Symphony of Ukrainian Fairy Tales, a particular project for kids with disabilities, at the hospital last Friday, and we had to perform Requiem for the Dead this Friday as well”, - says Makarenko. - Going to these ruins and performing in honor of our lost compatriots on one of the worst days ever for Ukraine was really difficult. Through pain and tears, we managed to bring the sorrow of the Ukrainian people to the attention of the world once more and raise funds for the reconstruction of the destroyed buildings so that people around the world could see that this can never happen again”.

We are grateful to all media representatives, both Ukrainian and foreign, for their coverage.

For reference: For more than 15 years, the Kyiv Classic Orchestra and the Ukraine National Specialized Children's Hospital "Okhmatdyt" have collaborated. Numerous themed events for young patients have been held on various occasions over the years, including Christmas, Easter, Defenders Day, Independence Day of Ukraine, and St. Nicholas Day. In order to promote the construction, a symphony orchestra gave a performance on the roof of the newly constructed building in 2015. In 2023, the "Psychological Recovery of Children through Music Therapy" project was carried out in collaboration with a team of hospital psychologists. "The Symphony of Ukrainian Fairy Tales" initiative for kids with impairments was introduced in the hospital's new facility on July 5, 2024.
