Herman Makarenko's art wins the world. The United States of America, Canada, Italy, the Vatican, France, Belgium, Norway, China, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Macedonia, Serbia, Iran. The audience in various parts of the planet greets Maestro with applauses. Global projects of cultural diplomacy presented before heads of the states and senior diplomatic officials, masterpieces of world music performed for the Ukrainian people – bridging cultures through music always remains his primary mission.
Being a student at the P. I. Tchaikovsky Kyiv State Conservatory, Herman Makarenko won his first victories at the All-Ukrainian competitions, later – at the International Festival of Arts in Canada and the International Competition of Conductors (MMAM) in Switzerland. The opportunity to start a career at the T.G Shevchenko National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of Ukraine, at the invitation of maestro Stepan Turchak, had maintained the school of excellence for the student of the famous professors Lev Weintraub and Roman Kofman.
While working at the National Opera of Ukraine, German Makarenko had accepted an invitation to the post of conductor of the Kyiv State Operetta Theater, became the artistic director, and chief conductor of the Chamber Musical Theater. In 1997 Maestro became the conductor and led the group of the Little Opera of Big New York in the USA, and the next season he received the status of a guest conductor of the Croatian National Theater in Osijek.
The elite community of opera connoisseurs accepted Herman Makarenko, the classic repertoire of the conductor is Faust by Charles Gounod, The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini, Don Juan of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Eugene Onegin of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The music for the ballet performances – Swan Lake by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Giselle by Adolf Adan, Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus and Bolero by Maurice Ravel – always gathers fans of the Maestro at the National Opera of Ukraine.
2004 became an exceptional year for Herman Makarenko. The first performance of the Kyiv Classic Orchestra took place at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ukraine's membership in UNESCO in Paris. The same year Maestro had presented to the public three innovative concepts – Premiere Concert, Declaration of Love, and New Year's Strauss Concert. These creative projects became significant to Herman Makarenko's orchestra. They soon confidently demonstrated the high level of Ukrainian musical art.
Herman Makarenko erases borders. The Premier Concert, with the official support of the embassies, introduced the culture of different nations to people in Kyiv. Authentic music from Norway, Sweden, Germany, Greece, Iraq, Turkey, and Argentina found a new sound in Ukraine. The Declaration of Love Project exalted the idea of unity – each program with the participation of opera and ballet artists has become a strong message of love. Finally, the New Year's Strauss Concert – the annual music celebration has forever changed the cultural life of Kyiv.
Strauss family music is the endless love of Herman Makarenko. A keen understanding of the heritage of Austrian composers gave the audience magnificent winter holidays. The Kyiv Classic Orchestra continues arranging social and charity evenings within the best traditions of the Vienna Ball. In 2018, the New Year Strauss Concert obtained a new social status – at the initiative of the Maestro, the Christmas Strauss Forum was held at the National Opera. Ukrainian conductors of various orchestras joined to curate the performance with the participation of young musicians, children of service members and children with special needs.
Each project of Herman Makarenko, who follows the philosophical and aesthetic school of Larysa Levchuk, combines professional experience and a scientific approach. International experts highly appreciated Maestro's Ph.D. work Conductor's Creativity in the Context of an Integrative Approach presented at the National Music Academy of Ukraine, as well as the monograph «Music and Philosophy: Schopenhauer, Wagner, Nietzsche» and «Conductor's creativity: aesthetic and artistic dimensions». Doctor of Arts, Ph.D. in Philosophy, Professor Herman Makarenko gives lectures and master classes in Ukraine, the USA, and China, paying particular attention to cultural research and educational innovation.
My Ukraine – is a patriotic project by Herman Makarenko, it includes studio production with the author's interpretation of the compositions of Mykola Lysenko, Myroslav Skoryk, Semen Gulak-Artemovsky, Vitaliy Gubarenko, and Yevgen Stankovych. Many music programs that represent the wealth of Ukrainian cultural heritage were created with the Maestro's efforts. To date, Herman Makarenko, together with the National Opera of Ukraine Symphony Orchestra and Kyiv Classic Orchestra, has released ten music discs with masterpieces of Ukrainian and world classical music.
The musical, scientific and social activities of Herman Makarenko won numerous honorary awards - the Order of Merit of the third degree, the Ambassador of Ukrainian Culture and the National Artist of Ukraine. In 2016, the Maestro became the first in Ukraine to receive an honorary status – the UNESCO Artist for Peace. This event inspired creating the Global Harmony Art Foundation, an independent platform designed to bring together artists of different countries in order to draw attention to the development of cultural identity in a global society. That means new music, new events, and discoveries.
