Herman Makarenko at the Charity Viennese Ball in Kyiv

On 21 April, Kyiv hosted the Charity Viennese Ball at the Kyiv City Hall, with the support of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO and the Mayor of Kyiv, Mr Vitaly Klitschko.

The artistic director of the evening was the renowned Ukranian conductor and UNESCO Artist for Peace Herman Makarenko. The artistic program included performances from the Kyiv-Classic Symphony Orchestra that he conducts, the lead singer of the Vienna State Opera Christian Drescher and the famous singer of the National Opera of Ukraine Susanna Chakhoyan.

In addition to the traditional Charity Viennese Ball for adults, a Ball for children took place on the second floor of the Kyiv City Hall. Children with disabilities from the Kyiv Center for Social Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities attended the ball to raise awareness and mobilize support around fundamental issues related to the inclusion of people with disabilities in society.
The funds raised during these events will be allocated for the development of the Kyiv Center for Social Rehabilitation of Children with Disabilities.

Herman Makarenko was designated UNESCO Artist for Peace in November 2016, in recognition of his commitment to promoting music as a vehicle for dialogue and mutual understanding among people.
